12 Dogs – Beaufort, NC to East Smithfield, PA and Middletown, NY 1/16/10

A few months back we worked with Joanna Shertzer and Encore Pets on a transport, and we absolutely wanted to work with her and her team again.  When she put in a request for another transport, I was happy to fill it.

Friday night I flew down to Beaufort with a friend of mine who flew co-pilot and got dinner with several of the Encore Pets and Carteret County Humane Society volunteers. It’s always a pleasure to get to know the volunteers we work with better. The Encore Pets team is very dedicated, and we talked about how we could work together in the future on more transports. Look for more transports happening with this group to save more animals!

Saturday morning we woke up and got to the airport – it was a beautiful day to fly up north. Andrea Pacetti from News 14 was there to cover the story, and we talked with them about the problems of overpopulation, and how they especially impact North Carolina, with individual shelters in the state putting down literally hundreds per week. They did a great story, and we’ve since gotten a lot of positive feedback from it. Thanks Andrea!

With all 12 loaded up (these were mostly larger dogs), we fired up the engines and were off for our first stop in Towanda, PA to drop off animals with the Animal Care Sanctuary. While there I had a good talk with Michelle who was my contact from there, and she told me about their facility, which is most impressive. They have a large amount of property that they keep the animals they rescue on, and work hard to give them good conditions and find homes for as many as possible. I’m hoping to get the opportunity to visit their facility at some point, and will certainly be doing more transports with to them in the future!

Back in the plane and on to Middletown, NY to drop off the remaining dogs with Pets Alive. Pets Alive is a great organization that I have delivered animals to many times before. They do an excellent job of finding the animals they receive new homes. We unloaded the remaining dogs in short order and were then back on our way home.

This transport went extremely well thanks to the hard work of Encore Pets and the Carteret County Humane Society volunteers. They are a dedicated group who work hard to ensure that the animals they receive are taken care of and find new homes. Thanks to their hard work and in part to transports from Cloud Nine Rescue Flights, Carteret County has gone from being a high-kill shelter to not having had to euthanize an animal in over 4 months.  This shows what a difference these transports make, not only in the lives of these animals but in the lives of all the animals that come into the Carteret County Huamne Society.

Joanna and I are already in talks for future transports – look for them coming up again soon!
